(SFMM) Lesson 10: What You See is What You Get — How a Harsh Comment Helped Me Embrace My Self-Taught Roots and Fueled My Commitment to Sharing My Love for Fast, Easy Food
What kind of evil hateful person would spread such vile. I for one love your idea. Loved the cast iron cooking demonstration and will be following you. Who doesn’t need a little help in the kitchen? If you can’t say anything nice, especially when someone is sharing their talents, DON’T say ANYTHING at all!
I totally agree with you. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything. I love that you added "especially when someone is sharing their talents." Yes, when someone is giving of themselves, we should be kind. I think we had the same lesson in manners.
You can cook for me anytime 👏👏. To answer your question, yes I’ve received some rude comments on Substack and at first it does hurt a little…until you look at their profile and their other comments/activity and decide they aren’t worth a comeback and may deserve to be blocked.
That person’s life is probably bland and they’re not happy, so they have to try to bring others down. Misery loves company. I find your tips help me think of alternative ways to look at how I prep and cook. Thank you.
at the top is the best! I am going to memorise it. I have lived long enough to let the criticism roll off my back. I worked very hard to learn what I know and I know there are plenty of people smarter and plenty not as smart as I. My opinions are based on long accumulated knowledge and experience. If you disagree with them, that’s fine. What counts is our character. When sharing, do we denigrate people personally or show them respect? So Gary, keep on sharing and toss out the nasty comments.
I love how you took a negative comment and turned it into something positive, letting it strengthen you. I have been thinking I need some new recipes so I am going to check yours out now.
Social media certainly has its fair share of mean-spirited people. Back during my brief encounter with Facebook, I was shocked when a friend of a friend told a woman that she should just shut up and that she looked like an old grandma anyway! (Yeah, let’s just attack people because of their age!)
Just know that you’re morally superior to that type of person, and put them in your mental disposal bin.
Unfortunately I have posted something here and there, that elicited some rude comments and a bit of chest tightening for me (as I’m sure most of us have), and probably that has made me more cautious and guarded. My particular exchange had to do with dogs, not cooking, but it hurt and I “get it.”
It’s a shame to see it going on but have often read that people who do that are insecure and it makes them feel more powerful to bring someone else down a notch or two. I always appreciate your posts! Sorry for those who didn’t.
I consider myself a pretty seasoned cook (no pun intended tended lol)…and I just LOVE your recipes (and all your other stuff as well)!! From the words of a very old coffee cup I have (handed down from my mom), “…Don’t let the bastards get you down!”!! People are so strange and I have no idea why someone felt the need to insult (says more about them than it says about you). You’re a ROCKSTAR in my book 🤩!!
Baby I love all your posts…I just don’t have time to read all of them. This is the 1st recipe I’ve seen from you and it’s sure Not bland. Your wife’sad recipes first) opinion is more accurate than the idiots who criticized you. (I always read recipes1st)
These comments everyone gets. I post on so e groups and there are always people who feel it is their job to call out anyone who says anything less than what they think is correct.
Well now you know how to feel about the post you got. Give it no thought. You have every right to put your posts out as you see fit. No one needs his contribution
I don’t subscribe for the cooking but that’s not because it probably isn’t good and flavorful. I have gifted a few subscriptions to a few friends that love cooking. My wife does most of our cooking and she loves your recipes and time saving ideas. We both enjoy your commentary in your essays. Thanks, and keep up the great writing! Cheers to great seafood and beef! You’re the real McCoy 🗽🇺🇸
Hey Dave. I very much appreciate your continued support. It's loyal readers like you and your wife that keep me motivated. You are true patriots. Thanks again.
Just had a picture from a friend that bought fresh Gulf of America shrimp at M and T Meats in Hawkinsville, GA 🇺🇸 wish I knew how to add a photo to the post….

Thanks for your assurance. Gives me more incentive to keep at it. Thanks again.

Yes, it's about manners and basic respect

Thank you, Ruth. You are right, comments like this don't deserve a comeback.

You are so correct about character. It's the defining trait in a person. Thanks so much for your input. It means a lot to me.

Thanks Karon. You are right, there' s a lot of meaness out there on social media. It's something we all have to navigate.
